Unhappy Transfer Case HELP

So while driving down the highway, my transfer case where it connects to the front shaft to the front axle busted and just freely spins clunking around all over the place. I don't have the money to fix it and I need my car to get to work in the morning. if i take off the front shaft and all the gears in the transfer case and just leave everything that connects from the tranny to the transfer case and from the transfer case to the rear axle and dont shift it into 4wheel drive will it effect anything?

If your Durango is all wheel drive you shouldn't, now If u have a 2 wheel drive with the options of 4x4 just remove the front driveshaft and you'll be ok

You should be fine just removing the front shaft. You shouldn't have to remove gears in the TC...

The gears are all showing, and the only thing holding the shaft up, is the chain that's around it. The casing is busted and just hanging there.

Oh your TC is busted as well?
Thats not good at all. I would replace asap and not drive. All the gears intertwine(sp?) so by removing one you loosen the others...ect...
You could go and pull one from the JY, inspect it and mabey just throw some new gaskets on it and install.

So just removing and keeping it in 2 wheel is not a good idea?

I am pretty sure if you just remove the front drive shaft and run around with the TC cracked you will burn the TC up the first time you drive it. So to simply answer your question no its not a good idea. Best thing would be get a new TC and front drive shaft from a JY if your tight on cash. I'd say it cant be more the $500 if you do the work yourself.

Someone had told me I could remove the front drive shaft and the TC and I'd be fine. Yea I was planning on doing the work myself of course, guess I'll start shopping for a new one ha.
I hate going to JYs, they always try to rip me off =[

Thank you so much for your help! And I apologize for silly questions lol

Haven't been under the D in awhile(lots of rain) but I am pretty sure the trans hooks to the TC, which means if you remove the TC and just go RWD you will be a couple of inches short from the trans to the rear driveline.
Just have to be firm with the JY's, make them know that you know what you are doing and know what you want. You can normally haggle with them some.
Good luck and keep us posted!
