If your pcm is overheating you'll either need a new one or get your rebuilt.

I wouldn't say that the problem is common, but it is the 98 and 99 trucks in dark colors that it affects the most.

Thanks for all the advice...I love my Durango and hope to keep it for many years to come! I have it all decked out in orange Harley Davidson and flames....it's my baby.

Yes, if its overheating then its time for a new PCM but, first i would try the ice trick to confirm.

Another member not to long again had to replace the PCM in his truck and used a exchange service and IIRC it was pretty cheap ( compared to the dealer price) Hope this helps and good luck.

yes if the pcm is overheating you will need to replace it (i wouldnt rebuild it personally but to each their own).

that_guy, this is a very common problem on 99-early 00 MY trucks, it is caused by the PCM being mounted too close to the fender and in the summer with the already hot weather and sitting in the hot sun all day they get even hotter. Add to that already excessive temperature the heat being thrown off by the engine and you have a major cooling issue. Like any other computer it will eventually get to a point where it is too hot to keep working correctly and it will shut off, when the PCM shuts off the engine stops running, once the computer(PCM) cools off it will properly run the engine again.

the Ice bag test is about the most reliable test we have for this particular condition, i will also add that some of the solder joints or PCB traces could be damaged by high enough heat which will cause a continuous running problem not an intermittent one

Oldschool is right!

The 1999's are known for the hot PCM issue, mostly dark trucks, but not all. Ice it down and see if the issues goes away, if it does then you need to replace it. You will find it under the hood passenger side against the cab and it will have 3 harnesses connected on yours. You can buy one that is rebuilt on ebay shipped to your door pre-programed for around $250-$300 with a life time warranty. It's easy to unhook your battery negative cable and install. Also, if the shop did not disconnect the negative battery cable when installing a Crank sensor or Cam sensor it will take out the new sensor.

Also could be your coil going out. New is about $35 or so.

Okay...I have read all your posts about the PCM. If it was damaged during the hot weather, would it cause it to do it now when the weather has been cooler here also? Or if it was just due to it overheating, would it still only do it when it was hot? It has ran fine and not stalled once since that one time on Monday but the scary part is I never know when it is going to do it!!?!?!? It will always start back up (so far at least) but it just cranks and cranks for about 5 seconds until I pump it a little or about 10 seconds if I do not touch the gas at all. Thanks again guys for all your input!

If it overheated enough to damage the joints causing a loose connection then yes because the vibration from driving would cause it to not connect then re connect...

oldschool is right, if the overheat cracked a solder joint somewhere it is very possible for vibrations from driving to cause an open circuit an a stall condition depending on which circuit it is in

Hi, I have a 2000 durango and am having the same problem. I found a solution to this fix somewhere on here about 3 weeks ago. It's not something the dealership will acknowledge so don't waste your money with them. E-mail me and when I find it I will e-mail you the solution. You have to do it yourself, or have someone do it for you. It will cost about $250 for the parts. We are fixing our today so I have to find this thread with the fix on it today.
