Default transmission question?

i have a 98 5.2 and i apparently have the 44re transmission. but today i was working on the diffs and changing out the fluids. after i went for a drive with a coworker and, i never noticed it till now but i have 5 gears in that tranny. now correct me if im wrong but arent the 44re's supposd to have a 4 speed? and not 5 speed? cuz it clearly shifts 5 times. or is it a 4 speed with an o.d? im very confused!!!!!!
cuz if its a 46re then i have been getting the wrong parts for this truck. or do the parts work with both the 44re and the 46re.

The last "shift"you hear is probably the Torque converter locking up. It either locks between 3 and 4 or after 4th. At least that's my assumption. Mine does it to.

he is right, you are counting the tc lockup as a gear, its not, you do have 4 gears

You have a 4 speed transmission.

It goes 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and Torque Converter lockup in 4th.

Torque Converter lockup in 3rd gear can only happen if the tow button is engaged.

I'm throwing this out since I have new issue. Transmission same, shifting has changed. Now won't go into 2? With firm/hard shift but light throttle shift. Is the converter shot. It hits redline stop, finally engages but no "power" felt. No passing gear, cruise shut itself off when it went deeper for gear. Hits Rev limiter with no shift then have to hold it or let off. Changed fluid since it first did it now at 138000. Time for rebuild?

You really should always start a new post and not hijack another. Now the problem you are having, The transmission doesn't shift at all into 2nd gear? When was the last time was the transmission was serviced? Because you may have either a broken band or missing strut for the front band, which is also your kick down/ passing gear band.
