Default Clicking noise when backing up

1998 Durango 5.9L SLT.
there's a very noticeable clicking that comes from the rear of the Durango when i am backing it up. it sound like an amplified cricket. i thought at first it might be the drum brakes adjusting( i'm new owner of this ). but i am guessing that is not the cause. i do believe that the same sound ocasionally comes from the front of the vehicle. any suggestions on what i might want to look at first to find the source of the noise? thanks.

i got under the durango and checked for freeplay in the u-joints. no noticeable freeplay in any direction. had it in Nuetral when i did the check by grasping the ds and looking for movement. is there anything else that i should have done to determine the condition? or is there any other componet(s) i should check out? failed to mention that the Durango has the rancho suspension lift kit installed.

You could try lifting the rear off of the ground and listening as you spin your driveshaft. Possibly a chipped ring or pinion tooth? This is going to sound stupid but i had a Trans am once with a super annoying ticking noise. I finally jacked it up and put it in drive because i couldn't pin it down. Turned out to be one of those thick zip ties someone put on the bottom of a cross member ticking off of my d shaft

thank you for the replies. i got the rear end up on stands to start spinning the wheels. but i noticed the rear shocks had noticeable play in them at their bottom mount point. tightened those up and also tightened the 1 'loose' one in the front. i am not getting the click sound anymore. but as it only happened periodically, it will take a few days before i am convinced that was the source of the noise. the shocks are Rancho shocks and all are mounted at their bottom with bolts and nuts. each also has a large washer pushed to the bolt head. something doesn't seem quite correct about this. but i will keep an eye on it in the future.
