Default transfer case swap.

Ok i need some help guys. I have a 99 5.2 4x4. According to the dealer i have a 232 t case. It has the normal 4 hi and low but also has 4hi full time. I found a t case from an 01 4.7 that is just normal 4hi and low. Does any one know which of these 2 are stronger and if a t case from a 4.7 will even bolt up to mine. Btw just incase there is already a thread about this I'm sorry, I only have my phone and can't find a search function with this app.

The dealer is wrong.... the full/part time T case is the NV242... 1999 5.2's came with a 44RE trans and the 2001 4.7 came with a 45RFE trans.

If i had to make a wild guess or put money on it i would say that they will NOT bolt up. Personally i would find another NV242 as that is a better case IMO.

As for the APP, its not an official forum app and should be flushed down the toilet IMO. I would see about getting a computer to view the forum its much better trust me...

the manual cases cannot be (easily) replaced with an electronic case. you are better off finding another mechanically shifted case to put into it

I would rather run in 2wd with tractor tires for traction than put an electronic t case in. the one I was looking at was manual. So the general consensus is that mine is better or beefier than the one I wanted to swap in then? Aside from the fact that it might not bolt up. If so I'm told there are clutches in there, if I do a fluid change do I need a friction modifier? My whole problem to begin with is that it will not go directly into 4 part time hi or low. I need to run about 40 or 50 yards in ft, then switch to pt. If I want low then after I get it into hi pt I need to stop and make sure it goes in (will sometimes pop into neutral) then go. never used to have to do this. Have checked the linkage and its fine. Kinda stumped because when it actually engages its rock solid. just a huge pain to get it in, not to mention embarrassing if people see me in the mud or snow haha

Might try pulling and rebuilding your current t case

If your is a 242, there are no clutches in it. It is strictly mechanically coupled gearing.

When it "pops into neutral", does the shifter actually move to neutral or does it remain in 4wd, but "acts" likes it is in neutral? Does the dash indicator change?

I just completely disassembled a 242. I went through each part one at a time to figure out exactly how the whole thing works. There are a few things that I believe could cause what you are describing.

Change the oil and look for any small bits of plastic.

if the case you were looking at was from a 2001 then it was an electronically shifted case, that is the only type of case that was available in 2001.

There a electric/hydraulic switch on my 231hd that was kicking me out of 4lo for too much torque. If you have low reved up too much the computer kicks you out. $25 for a new one.

Sorry shrp, that's my mistake i meant 00 not 01, i was wondering why you kept saying that ha. Yes it actually goes into neutral. Light goes out and everything. The popping out always happens as soon as i put it into drive. If it is the same as a manual Trans id describe it as a bad synchro maybe. Doesn't grind just doesn't like to stay in the first time. I'll try changing the oil and see what happens. If there aren't any clutches how does the full time 4 wheel work? I know in the winter in ft if i slammed on the brakes it would disengage and the front tires would slide, hit the gas and its in 4 wheel again.

full time uses either clutches or a viscous coupler, part time the two drivelines are locked together
