Default 44re vs 46re

OK, seems that no one can answer me out of 6 shops. What the hell is the difference between. The transmission behind my 318 vs the one behind the 360? Dealer said that the starter was on opposite side a pcm change like he was reading a bulletin. My trans needs rebuild and didn't want to waste time on the wrong info. I know I have taller first gear.

Basically the only diff in the two is that 1st and 2nd gear are geared different and the 46RE is a little more "beefed" up for heavier duty use...

Personally, unless you plan on doing alot of towing or HD work with the 44RE should be fine.

the 46 is simply a beefed up version of the 44.

chrysler transmission numbers explained

xy_-

x- number of gears
y- torque rating (how much power it can handle w/o blowing up)
_- drive style, R for rear wheel drive (longitudinal mounted) T for transverse mount (front wheel drive, more commonly called a transaxle)
- - control type e electronic overdrive, h full hydraulic, fe fully electronic

Id take the 46 over the 44 any day. Ive got one in my jeep and its way past 281k and still running strong. Never been rebuilt its been maintained fluid filter and adjusted the transmission bands. But thats it. In jeeps with less miles you cant even tell the difference. But I take care of my cars and dont peel out or pull trees out of the ground like a dumbass. Watching idiots peel out and burn rubber is funny knowing your car will last twice to three times as long as theres. Ive towed vehicles and campers. pulled my friends and myself out of the mud with it.

Okay, the A500 went to a 904 and then went to the 42/44 RH/RE. The 727 went to a A999 and then to the 46RH/RE transmission. The 44RE transmission is smaller in many ways, and you can not interchange any parts into the 46RE. But you can use parts from a 47RE or 48RE transmission. Because the internal parts are bigger on the 46RE transmisson. Here how the term works, 4 is how many forward gears and 6 is the type of duty, R means rear wheel drive and E is electrical controlled. I hope this helps.

Here is a test for you motorheads. Using the information above, What type of vehicle does this transmission fix in, 42RLE?

Well, I am dropping it off to the transmission Guy and he found HD clutches and torque converter. "Middle of the road" rebuild without killing me on parts for racing. Gave him info on the way the truck is used. So 44 with 46 strength. The torque converter numbers match between the two. Still could not get one dealership to tell me sufferance. Leads me to believe they don't know Jack. The parts Guy looked up part interchange.

Hmm...

Challenger? Wrangler maybe? Rear wheel drive AND light duty tranny, not a whole lot manufactured these days that fits that combo.

More on topic, how difficult would the swap be between the 44 and 46?
