Rear differential whine!...then smoke!
Ok, I finally got the chance to look at my truck. Been working like crazy!
The leak is coming from where the red arrow is.
The gears seems ok. Nothing looks chipped nor damaged but I did find a half inch piece of metal in there along with an inch full of oil.

Where could the whine be coming from? Are there any special tools needed to change the pinion seal?

i didnt see any clutch packs in there so it likely is NOT a trac lock.
if you only had an inch of oil in the bottom it was WAYYY low, fill it back up (replace the seal first if possible) and see if the whine goes away, it could just be from low oil in the diff.
