Question a/c compressor knock?

so please please please tell me that a knocking compressor means its about to explode.

Driving home today i began to hear loud knocking about a block away from my home i pull into driveway and its still there. i turn a/c off so i can hear better and the knock goes away. turn it abck on. knock comes back. i open the hood turn the a.c on and the knock continues and i can feel the knocks if i touch the compressor. does this mean its saying good bye?

meant to say. not about to explode. im tight on money and dont have funds to deal with a broken a/c compressor. would a low freon level make it knock?

no not directly, however the compressor is lubricated by oil in the freon which being low will cause noises.

which engine do you have? if you have a 5.2 or 5.9 you can buy a shorter serpentine belt and bypass the a/c compressor until you can get it fixed (or not as you decide)

in that case you could buy a dummy pully to put on in place of the compressor, im not sure how much they cost but a whole lot less than a new compressor.

or, since in the origional post it sounds like it only does it when the a/c compressor is running, just unplug the clutch from the wire harness so that it cant engage.
