Default So I have a tire safety question...

So Im looking at going to 17" tires on my 2000 D...The tires below are what I want, I havent decided on the actual size yet but this is the tread pattern I want at a price I can afford...I plan on lowering my D maybe 2 or 3 inches for a more agressive look...My question is this...These tires are not rated for an SUV so how dangerous would it be to run these tires? Fact is I won't be running it at tripple digits and hard corning but at times will have my family of 4 on the road...What are everyones thoughts on this?

93w is 1433# per tire. 5732# total. My Durango weights in at 5200# with me in it. Fator in your weight plus cargo. I would not pull a trailer. Call a tire shop for better tires. There are low profile truck tires out there. Plus your paying for a Zr tire.

service rating of 93w is the weight and speed rating

93=about 1400 lbs per tire

you have 4 tires
1400*4 = 5600 lbs total vehicle weight

the D weights about 4800 lbs as it sits in your driveway w/o any passengers or belongings in it so add a driver (150 lbs) and you are at 4950, that give you an additional 650lbs worth of total load available, if it were me i would not be willing to chance it.

consider this approximately 150-200 lbs for each adult passenger, 75-120 for each child plus all your luggage if you are doing road trips, it adds up very quick.

this means your family of 4 weighs between 450-640lbs, that addition does not leave you much of a safety margin. (all of this assuming a perfectly even weight distribution which is not the case, the front axle of an unloaded truck bears more weight than the rear because thats where the engine and trans sits

the W is 168mph top speed for the tires

the stock tires on these trucks have a service rating of 112T

112 isnt on the load chart that i ahve, however a higher number is a higher load and 110 is 2300 lbs per tire and T is a speed rating of 118mph

Thanks guys...sounds like bad stuff just waiting to happen...And yes I plan on lowering my D ...for me it sits way too high for a street driven 2 wheel drive...I want the performance looking tread pattern like this but I have a family of 4 that I will not risk....

The reason that the load index is too low is because that is a car tire. I would really recommend a truck or light truck tire at the least. That being said if your determined to go with this size, same size BFG KDW2's are a decent option, and they give you a little more cushion with a 98 load index, still wouldn't tow or load that much in it. These are amazing tires, I have the same ones on my truck in a 295/45/20 and don't have a single complaint. Plus I love the tread design.

Side note: Also thought about lowering the D, let me know how that goes.
