Default using oil

i have a 99 durango slt 5.2l v8 110,000 miles... it has been using oil for a little while,,, i was going to do a valve job on it,, but i was told to just replace the intake gaskets,,, does this sound right?? is it a common problem?

Yes the intake plenum gasket blowing out is very common. Pull the air hat off and look down the throttle body. If its blown you should see oil or even in some cases the blowout its self.

Is this just a 5.2 problem or have owners seen this on the 4.7 too? My 4.7 using oil, but I expect it's just the high mielage (200K)

the plenum gasket is a 3.9/5.2/5.9l issue, the 4.7 is not affected by it, however define using oil a certain amount is used by any and every engine
