Default Delayed Shift from 2nd>3rd

Hello all! I just bought a 1998 Durango with a 5.2 L and 44RE trans. Every shift is good except 2nd to 3rd. If I let my foot off the gas a bit at 2000 RPM I can make it shift, if I don't it seems to rev up to 3K and then shift. Reverse is good, tranny fluid is red and full (not overfull) and 1-2 and 3-4 shifts are fine.

I'm hoping this is not the first sign of my tranny failing, I'm hoping there is some kind of adjustment that can be done. Any ideas? Thanks!

Bob

I haven't taken mine to the trans shop yet, maybe with my next paycheck. One thing since I posted though is new. When the truck is cold (like after sitting overnight) the trans disengages at around 2000 RPM in second gear. I let off the gas and it re-engages at around 1500 RPM, eventually shifting into 3rd. After a few minutes it works as before (delayed shift from 2-3) and doesn't disengage the rest of the day. Weird.

This is a common problem with mopar transmission when they have high mileage, 70 to 100k. The transmission seals are causing the shifting problem. The fix is a seal kit.

So I shouldn't bother doing the sensors I should just take it in? That's the only thing I won't mess with is the trans ill rebuild or fab anything just not a trans lol

Its up to you, if you want to try replacing the sensors.

So master tech, do you know a ballpark figure on what a trans shop would charge to do a seal kit? I've never done one and am guessing it is beyond my capabilities, so i think i need to take it in and i don't want to get robbed. Thanks!

I did the sensors and filter and gasket and it took about 6 quarts to refill and it shifts awesome now and has more torque/power : ) well worth it just wish I knew how to do a shift kit I would've done that while I was in there but ill learn it someday transmission stuff is the only thing I don't know how to play with

Bob

A seal kit may cost about 150.00 plus the labor. Thats if you don't need any hard parts. Like a pump and torque converter.
