Default eFan Epic Fail

This is a little ironic. Shortly after I posted in another efan thread, asking about the A/C performance, I noticed I was starting to overheat a tiny bit (just over 1/2 on the needle). Popped the hood and the fan wasn't blowing and I saw that the 70 amp fuse was blown. I hoped it was an anomoly, so I swapped the fuse. It worked for 1 trip, and blew again. I have the high side of this fan wired and don't use a controller. I also have a quick disconnect that allows me to use the low side in the winter, so I rolled it over to the low side and replaced the fuse one more time. This morning while running errands I was at a stop light when I smelled smoke. I looked around for the poor loser whose car was burning, and it was mine! Pulled over and it looks like the smoke got let out of the Taurus fan.... Pride is suffering a little this AM, I'm hoping this was a fluke. The fan has been running since January without an issue. The Taurus fan is relatively cheap, so I'm going to give it another shot.

The only thing I can think of is that this fan just can't handle to only run on High all the time. I didn't need the controller to make mine work, although without one, I can't take advantage of the High and Low speed. Just thought I'd share.

If you bought your fan new it should have some sort of manufacturer's warranty on it. It probably was just a fluke though, mine (I'm pretty sure it's made by depo) was on high for 8 hours straight (it's on high when the a/c is on) yesterday driving from PA to SC.

You should opt for the high power Cherokee Efan. Dodge just don't like having a FORD product Under the Mopar hood. just saying!

if you still have the original power harness, it should bolt up to the cherokee fan without any mods.

Yeah, I'd say get the Grand Cherokee fan if you do have to buy a new fan. From what I understand the airflow ratings are pretty much the same between the two fans, but if I'd have known about the grand cherokee fan when I did the conversion I'd have gone with it since it's a direct bolt on. At least my taurus fan is just an aftermarket part meant for a ferd and not an actual ferd part.

Can you Link me to the Cherokee fan? I'll check it out.

Swapped out the fan yesterday. Looking at the bad fan, it looks like the ground wire burned through the shielding and shorted with the high speed wire right where it enters the motor. Not sure what to think about that, other than I'm glad it didn't turn out to be something stupid that I did.

That sure is odd. Did it at least get covered under warranty or did you have to pay out of pocket.

I didn't have any of the warranty documentation handy. I didn't have a lot of time to be down either, so I just paid out of pocket on it. I may pursue it now that I'm back up, and if I get a replacement or refund, I could sell it.

Did you find anything out with the warranty? My taurus fan just died today too, so I had to put the mechanical fan back on.

I coudn't find any of the documentation from when I initially purchased the fan, so I didn't really pursue it. I'm keeping all the new fans receipts and packaging stuff handy just in case it fails again. How did yours fail?
