towing capabilities
Hi, my name is Gary and I reside in Michigan. I currently own a 01 Durango with the 5.9 motor in it and it is a 4 X 4 all wheel drive model. My question is this. I will be moving up to purchase a bigger boat that has a weight of 5400 lbs, not quite sure how much the trailer itself weighs. I have recently had the transmission rebuilt and replaced the front differential. Will my Durango be able to pull it well enough to not struggle all that much?

What axle ratio does your truck have? Does it have the tow package?
A 2001 with a 5.9 and a 3.92 axle ratio is rated for a maximum of 7350. As long as you have the 3.92 axle ratio and your trailer is not more than 1950lbs then you are within the recommended max towing weight. As long as you stay within the max weight you should have no issues towing the larger boat.
I have a question, on my label on the drivers side door it says the GAWR front is 3600, GAWR rear is 3850 and the GVWR is 6400. How do they come to the GVWR, wouldn't they just add the 2 GAWR's together to get 7250 instead of the 6400? The funny thing is I have a 03 Envoy with a 4.2 straight 6 cylinder motor in it and it says the GVWR is exactly the same as the 5.9 Durango at 6400. I think Id feel more comfortable towing that boat with my Durango instead of the straight 6......
