Default Cruise Control Problem

Every few days my cruise quits working. the light wont come on until it just decides to work again. sometimes its half an hour sometimes its 2 days. i don't know whats wrong with it and i don't really know anything about cruise control in general except that its vacuum driven. but i really don't think this has anything to do with vacuum because its got great vacuum at the plug and the light wont come on when i hit the on/off button. i believe its an electrical issue somewhere. any ideas?

yeah, it might be the clockspring inside the steering wheel.

thanks. is there a good chance it could be the switch on the steering wheel or the main module itself? i looked in the switch and saw that itss only 2 wires in and controlled by resistors across the switches... i could see this very easily having problems over time and it has over 227,000 on it now. the intermittent problem is getting increasingly worse the past couple weeks. it was happening every few weeks then once a week now every other day it seems. also, i checked those 2 wires into the switch and there was no power or ground. which kind of ssounds like the clock spring.. the module had no power going to it either. i tested both with the key on. the module did have ground though

You can test the switches by getting yourself a digital multi-meter and measure the ohms.

well the steering wheel switches have been replaced and so has the clock spring..... no luck. i cant find a cruise control fuse anywhere on this thing. anyone know where it is? also im starting to consider maybe speed sensors. when i turn my key on the ABS and BRAKE lights on the dash come on for about 5 seconds. they never used to do that. they stay on even after all the other lights shut off for about 3 more seconds before they both then go off. any ideas?

My abs light does stay on after the rest have gone out, then it goes out. I usually park with my parking brake on so the brake lights on until I take it off. My cruise control does work.

This is going to be a shot in the dark. There is a large connector under the dash near the right side of the steering column. I believe the screw has a 10 mm head. Remove the connector and inspect the inside. If the pins look green in color. Clean the connection and try the speed control.

Master Tech, i cant find the connecter you are explaining. i took the under dash panel off that is directly below the steering column and could not find a plug around where you are describing but when i bought this D about 8 months ago i put a new heater core in it and had to take the entire dash assembly out so there is a chance that plug maybe didnt get connected back fully or is not making the best connection where it needs to be. i cant find a main connector for the harness that goes up along the steering column. im guessing that's the harness you are talking about? also is there a fuse for the speed control on these things...?
