Default 46re Transmission DIY

HI! I am Christian.

I am currently in the process of taking apart my 46re transmission that was in my dodge 1999 Durango. I took some photographs of the individual parts that were in the bellhousing and wanted to know is all of them look decent, or if some of them need to be replaced.

Here is the website where you can view the photos.

Just looking at your pics quickly, it appears to be a healthy wearing transmission. The front band is totally shot as there is no material left on the band. I would replace the band and the front drum. Just curious, what was it doing that cause yo to pull is and disassemble it?

At the beginning of all these problems, the car first started slipping from first to second gear

Before I took it in, I took a test light and checked the transmission overlay socket. I swapped a relay with another relay to make sure the relay works

When I took my car in to try and pass inspection, the codes PO753 and P1765 went off. The guy told me its my overdrive solenoid. It could also be the TCM and the harness.

I found the front band anchor in the transmission pan. This might explaining why the front band is worn. I took apart the transmission to see for myself o see if there is anything else that needs to be replaced. At the beginning of all these problems, the car first started slipping from first to second gear. I think this was due to the front band anchor coming loose.

I can't help much with the trans (I just took mine in to be rebuilt), but... it's a truck.

Thank you all so much for your input.

Iv also Asked some of the people on autowebrepair.com and this is what one person said...

"I always replace the Torque Converter on any re-build. The main reason is that you can’t get all of the fluid & dirt out of it. That means that you contaminate your re-build as soon as you start the engine. The other reason is that you can’t see in it to check anything so you really don’t know what’s going on in it."

"Picture #97 seems to show a piece broken out? I can’t tell from the picture. If it’s broke you should have found the missing part in the pan or rolling around in the tranny."

"Picture #133, you may want to replace that driving shell as the splines are pretty worn."

"Pictures #142-148, Planetary Gears. You want to grasp each gear and try to wiggle it on the shaft. “End Play” is OK but you don’t want them to wiggle on the shafts. Hold them under a good light and inspect all of the teeth. Surface scratches, dents, and slight discoloration are nothing to worry about. You are looking for Chips in the “Hard Surface” of the teeth or extreme wear. Check the other planets the same way."

"Picture #154, I would replace that Sun Gear. I can see some wear on it and you have to remember that it gets 4 times the wear of the Planets riding on it. Most of the ones that I have seen are in pretty bad shape."

Also, this is what others said on dodgedurango.net ....

"The only thing I suppose you could tell by the eyeball method is the cracked rubber boot in one of those pics."

"Overall looks good to be rebuilt, inspect the parts were you found the worn trust washers and replace if rough. "

Any opinions? Thanks.

I agree with replacing the torque converter.. i replaced mine when i rebuilt over the summer.... Also, any half decent shop will include the cost of a new one in the final price...

When i was rebuilding mine i became good friends with the guy that owns the transmission shop right in town as he took the time to help me out alot... when i asked him about replacing the TC he told me that most of the time they are fine but, a rebuild will never leave his shop without a new one....

basically what i did with mine was i pulled everything apart and carefully looked it over.. anything that showed signs of heavy wear got replaced...

keep in mind that when the trans went in July, i was still on the OEM one.. It lasted 15 years and almost 180,000 miles.

You don't need those other sites. This is the best site for information. The reason of the transmission not shifting correctly from 1st to 2nd is the front kick down band. When you get to removing the direct clutches from the overdrive housing, you will need a press. Because there are two snap rings you need to remove the clutches. If you are replacing the torque converter, be sure to check the front pump bushing. Also blow out the cooler lines and replace the one way check valve. If you have any questions, drop me a pm.
