Default Did the homebrew intake mod today...now another question...

Got the k&n drop in for $34 at advance. Had the flex tubing sitting in the back. Figured i had 20 minutes before work so i installed everything in 10 minutes. Cutting the rubber flap behind the grille was easy as it was dried out. Driving tonight and there was a huge difference in the 2k-4k range. Love that nice pull when you get on the throttle and the engine sounds more aggressive. Its 16 degrees out right now so the air was pretty thick tonight! Thing is what to do next? Theres this guy selling me some gibsons for $75. I looked them up and theyre pretty expensive so its a steal if i get them. Thing is hes hard to reach. Been trying for a few days now. The question is are the headers worth the trouble or should i focus on getting a 52mm throttle body instead?

Feel like taking a pic of your cold air intake set-up and posting how-to instructions? If it's less than $50 worth of parts I might try it while I have some time off work....

It's literally on the DIY section.

Thanks for posting that... will most likely be my next project. Did you have noticeable results with new system?

The engine is noticeably more audible under throttle....and I mean in a nice way. Instead of a humming muffled sound, it almost sounds like a diesel once you get on the gas and when you floor it, the traditional V8 sound kicks in at 2,500RPM.

Performance-wise, definitely an increase in torque. Pulls better from stops, spun the tires a couple times already and passing on the highway is much more fun. The colder the air, the better. It's around 20-25 degrees here in New England and I do notice slight gains and decreases depending on ambient air temperature.

When you get on the gas, you just hear that engine take in a huge breath as the torque pulls the rig. Engine definitely is breathing better. Mileage has gone up. Normally I go around 13.0 mpg average based from the center display. The past few days since I did the mod it has stayed at a solid 13.3 mpg average which most likely translates to an increase in highway mpg. Today under normal driving, it actually went up to 13.4 and even under stop and go driving it stayed at 13.4 when normally it would drop to 13.2 before I get to work.

Not trying to exaggerate here either. Just trying to be detailed with the differences I've noticed.

As for keeping this mod under $50, Advance auto is doing 35% off online orders until the end of December 30, which starts 5 minutes from when I made this post.. I ordered it online for pickup at a nearby store and I ended up spending $35 instead of $55 and the 4" flex hose I used is at the gardening center at Lowe's for $2.50. The mod literally took altogether 15 minutes which is hardly a project. Five minutes to install the K&N after picking it up, I literally installed it in front of the store. The hose took about 10 minutes before I had to punch in for work to route it around the hoses and tubes. The rubber shield in my rig is dried up from exposure so it only took my bare hands and a Remington knife to cut the appropriate sized hole.

Again, now I'm wondering if I should chase after the headers or go to 52 mm throttle body. I'm figuring I would lose bottom end with headers? I feel something heavy like a durango would need more bottom end grunt than high end horsepower? Thoughts, anyone?

Wow, thanks for all the details. Sounds like it is definitely worth it.

Was this on a 4.7? Read in one of the threads that there is a TCM module or sensor that gets in the way on the 4.7.

I have the 5.2. Do you have the 4.7?

I don't know how this relates to anything...

Maybe you meant Placebo effect? I'm just being detailed but again I'm not trying to exaggerate. The difference is night and day. Maybe I should have kept it general...

Hey Slidinsideways, thanks for pointing me in the right direction on this! Finished mine up yesterday and you weren't kidding about the night and day difference in horsepower and torque!
