birds&bells living in My5.9
Greetings Everyone.Everyone. I'm Willie The new kid on the block.Nice Web site,& I count it a real privilege&honor to now be a part of. My truck is a 20000,durango.4x4,r/t,5.9, I recently replaced the harmonic balancer. In.In so doing,removing the fan&fan clutch..It was out of the truck for a couple days,before the reassembly process took place.when holding the unit it was making strange bell like sounds.Now the trucks back together.When driving I'm hearing similar sounds coming from that area of the truck.It kinda sounds like a screw,or nut fell inside a pulley cover &is just rattling around.Idid recently replace plugs wires,rotor,cap.upper&lower hoses,thermostat.If its not the fan clutch,might it be the water pump?I've been running cool,with no water leaks.Any ideas on this issue would be most welcome at this time.Thanks,Willie
Does it make this noise when sitting idle, or only when running down the road ? If it only does it when running down the road could be a lot of things. If it does it at idle when stopped also then it could be one of the following.
Pull the power wires off the AC pump and see if the noise stops, if it does it could be the clutches in the AC pump. Grab hold of the fan clutch and pull up and down, side to side and see if there is play. If so you could proceed to pull the clutch fan off and try same thing on the flange of the water pump. Should be obvious if either one has a bad bearing in it. Start there and then you can proceed to pulling the belts off and checking your alternator pully for a notchy feeling when spinning it, and any other tensioner pullies for same.

I did the trouble shooting steps as suggested.And in doing this,the problem was found & corrected!It turned out to be the idle arm pulley.The bearing was bad.I also found a small tool was tumbling in, and around the water pump pulley casing.Apparently left behind by the previous owners,because I have not done work in that area of the truck,nor did I recognize the tool.So the birds & bells sounds have been replaced with the awsome sound of a healthy roar of My 5.9.Im gonna take a few pics this week & then ill post them.Thanks again.Willie
