Default 99 Durango - Transmissio - in drive @ stoplight -> high rev when push gas

Folks,
Love the forum btw. I looked through the transmission sticky but did not see or maybe missed an option for being stopped at a stop light and taking the foot off the break and hitting the gas and the engine revs and the transmission does not engage immediately. I then back off the gas and try again and it usually catches. Any insight?

Thanks!

Default Thanks

I actually did not check it properly after my recent "tune-up" that I might consider a tune-down at this point. Added a bottle of Lucas transmission stop leak and a bottle of ATF-4 and things are better.

Time to find a new mechanic. Thanks folks.

you mean the LUCAS OIL is the problem, or that he was low on fluid in general?

both, being low on fluid will cause problems but there is a very good reason chrysler tells you NOT to put anything except the recommended transmission fluid (ATF +3 or +4 depending on your year) into the transmission, bc its BAD for it and will cause LOTS of problems up to and including premature failure

Thanks for the responses. You guys had me googling and found old threads on this forum from the 08&09. Much more negative feedback than positive. The trans is not revving high anymore but prob would have been fine with only ATF4.

How do I get it out properly? Trans flush or something more? I think I drove from ATL to Boston at 190k+ miles and now at 210k. Any advice would be great.

just purge it out, there is a thread in the FAQ on how to do this, basically you just let the trans pump itself out while you add more to it

The fluid level been too low or the filter is clogged. If you do have a leak, Don't add stop leak, as the other members have written. It will only cause problems. Also make sure that transfer case is not in neutral. The good thing is you don't have a 45or 545RFE transmission. Then it could be either a filter or torque converter problem.
