Default Replacing Trans

Planning on replacing the trans in my 98 durango. Got the build sheet from dodge just to make sure I get the correct one. 44RE. when to a parts store to get a price and some more info. The said they list a 42RE, A500, and A518. but no 44RE. Is the A500 or the A518 the same or not? thinking they are not electronically controlled like the REs.

i found an EXTERNAL trans filter. i have one on my 01 dak 3.9 V6. for two years. be sure any hose is high pressure. i think most chrysler coolant tubing is 3/8" dia. and i think the return line goes to the rear most fitting on the left side. all so if you replace tubing use ONLY steel tubing. copper WILL FAIL!!!
man o man i about forgot yes its a cut & past sorry. __________________
after you clean the trans. add this to your*chrysler*trans. an external fluid filter
1. go to auto-zone. get 2210, its called a power steering filter, but it is for transs to. it is for 3/8 tubing. by (magna-fine) be sure to use high pressure hose. Reff:http://www.magnafilter.com
2. for other sizes wix 58964 5/16 tube size

A500 = 44RE

A518 = 46RE

42RE and the 44RE are the exact same transmission, There both A500's.

Just Curious... are you planning to remove and replace the trans yourself? I removed and rebuilt my own last spring, same trans

Might as well replace a whole lot more as you'll have the motor out and that be easier to work on

Ok Thanks for the Info. Yes I am gonna replace the motor as well. has over 185,000 on it and uses some oil. My only question now is, I do alot of towing with my durango. Will the 42re handle the towing?

You actually don't need to remove the engine to get the transmission out.

No, you don't want to go down to the 42re. The 42re (used with the V6s) isn't as strong as the 44re.

If your replacing the motor and the trans, and your going to do alot of towing i would put a 5.9L with a 46RE in it.. You will have to replace your drive shafts as the 46RE is a bit longer than the 44RE but well worth it.

FWIW, 185,000 miles on these motors is just barely breaking them in.. I know of several with over 3-400,000 miles on them. I would be willing to bet the "using" oil is just a leaky seal somewhere.
