Default Replacement spaekers for a 98

I searched through the threads and FAQs and saw that most were old posts, not my year, disscontinued part numbers and links that were no longer good. I'm looking for a full set of speakers for a 1998 SLT with the Infinity sound system. Not looking to upgarade and spend mucho dollors, just looking for an OEM replacement that bolts in and gives me the origenal sound quality, which was good enough for me.
The ones in there have been bad for years but it is getting to the point that my wife does not even want to ride in the truck anymore. She, in fact, is the one initiating this post because it is my fathers day present. In looking through the old posts, I'm not sure if I need a normal depth or shallow. I do know from the posts they need to be 2 ohm, but whether they are a 6012, 6022is, 6002, 6012si gets kind of confusing. I have the seperate tweeter in the door so I'm assuming the other two are a two way.
Just looking for the easy way out and find someone that just did it and can point me in the right dirrection with part numbers.
Thanks o big D gurus

You will spend way more replacing the speakers with OEM quality. The replacements are over $100 each, and they're **** quality. The speakers suspension material is made out of a crap papery/foam combination and they dry rot after some time. Your best bet is to go to crutchfield.com and enter your vehicle info and it will give you everything that will fit.

+1 on Crutchfield. They will send you detailed instructions and any needed adapters for free and good prices on parts with very fast shipping.

I think im getting all new in mine as well beens it has an aftermarket cd player from the late 90's in it by optimus radio shack use to carry them. It barely works so new head unit and 4 6.5" speakers is what i may get done maybe tomorrow probably alpine. I am gona just have it installed so that I don't have to deal with it. I'm going to be glad to have good sound in her then exhaust and I have her ready for mud and snow

You can easily rebuild your oem speakers or replace them with one of the available infinity aftermarket speakers. I made a huge write up on this issue in the FAQ section. Link at bottom of this reply.

I replaced my broken oem speakers (rotted out foam surrounds) with infinity 6012's (current model at that time). They were 4 ohm speakers. Still sounded good. You can use 2 ohm or 4 ohm speakers. The 4 ohm aftermarket infinity speakers do not sound distorted at high volume levels as opposed to the oem 2 ohm speakers.

I would not recommend shallow speakers unless you don't mind losing bass response. To use the deep depth speakers, you will have to reuse the spacer that came with the oem speakers.

Before you begin the project, here is a link from craigcentral that will walk you thru on how to remove the door trim to access the speakers. This link also works well if you need to remove the door trim to work on your power windows/ power locks, power windows/door switches. Basically if you need access to the interior of the door.

Here is what you are looking for if you are decide aftermarket or oem.

aftermarket:

You will need to purchase this adaptor ring kit to bolt on your after market deep 6.5 inch speakers to the OEM spacer on the door. Kit runs from $8 to $12 for set of two and you will need two sets of these to convert all 4 speakers.

OEM:

If you want to repair your oem speakers, go to http://www.simplyspeakers.com/.

Purchase the replacement polyeurathane rubber edge surround kits. Cost around $34.

youtube video on how to replace the foam edge.

I decided to repair my OEM's and it was a PITA to remove and clean up the old foam surround to prep it for the rubber edge replacments. But it was worth the experience and I will re-install the OEM's back to the truck and keep my infinity's if I ever decide to sell my truck.

Either of these methods will not require any kind of retrofitting to mess up the OEM mounts on the doors. Both methods will be a direct bolt on to existing equipment.

here is the link to my write up. If you want to see how I replaced the foam surrounds on the oem speakers, go to page 5-6 I think on the thread and you will see pics.

That's a good video and all, but even after you repair the foam surround, you're still left with bad quality Infinity speakers.
