Exclamation Transfer Case Blew Up

Hey everyone I am new to this forum and ive looked everywhere and cant get an answer from threads previous. So I was on cruise going 60 when my durango started shaking and a loud bang. low and behold I pulled over and the transfer case blew. I have it in the shop now and they quoted me $1300 with a used transfer case and a new front drive shaft. is that a fair price? and they reassured me that nothing else was broken on the vehicle. but im concerned the front diff could have problems because if im correct while I was coasting to stop the front drive shaft could've been flopping around like a fish out of water. I get the vehicle back on Friday but im hoping all is well. Any insight would be helpful

Thanks!!

Were you driving in 4wd on dry pavement?

Had you recently used 4wd? You also haven't said what year, engine, transfer case or anything. Can't be much help without that information.

Sounds like it probably didn't disengage completely then, which made the drivetrain bind up. You can inspect the front axle for excessive slop.

There was always a small clunk that would occur only from acceleration at a stop. Drove like that for a month or so. Could that have been something going bad in transfer case? And what are the odds of anything else breaking from the transfer case exploding? Dealer says everything is alright but you never know.

could have been slop in the chain or something. all we can do is speculate now.

Yeah I'm hoping everything goes smooth after getting from the dealer. Hoping to get another 80-100,000 miles out of this bad boy

You might want to see if you can find a used transfer case locally. I bought one for $100 a couple years ago (went from nv231 to nv242) and was able to remove the old one and put the new one in, in under 3 hours.
