no rear heat from overhead ducts
thought I would give this a try...I have a 2003 4.7l slt durango with front and rear a/c and heat. The problem is that when the heater is on all the front controls work fine and do what they are suppose to do....but the rear vents pass no heat, just cool air...the fan speeds all work right, can run them fine from front panel or switch to rear control....just no warm air comes out !! Does anyone have any idea whats wrong? I am not sure where to start checking. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.....THANKS
I had the same exact problem. No matter what I did with the temp adjustment it just blew the same cool air. It ended up being a flap in the system that opens/closes to allow either cold or hot air (under the dash). I was under warranty at the time so it was fixed for free. I did ask what the cost was and they (the dealer) said $545.00. $20 for the part and the rest for labor. It required the whole dash to be removed and basically a whole days work.

Now I'm not to sure on the 2003 but I believe it is just fan or a/c when the a/c is on in the front. I haven't seen anything on heat up there.
sorry to dredge up a ...two year old post, but I have a similar issue with the 99 Dodge Ram Van I just bought. It seems that the rear ceiling vents are full cold, even though I have heat on up front. The manual indicates heat should be coming from the walls, so I am guessing the mixture flap is jazzed up but i really dont want to dig in there since I just bought the damn van.
Gentlemen:
IIRC the rear system is capable of both heat and A/C,and there is a mechanical doorthat diverts the air either through the AC core or heat core depending on what has been selected. Sometimes this door sticks and dos not send the air the right direction.
Also, I believe the AC comes out up high, and the heat comes out at floor level. That seems to be the way the rear system in my 01 works.

In my D the only way to get heat through the overhead vents is to put the controls on A/C and set temp on high. This sometimes takes a while for the door todivert.Otherwise on any other settingthe heat will only come out from the vent behind the rear passenger side seat.
Thats my story and I'm sticking to it.

I just Recently had mine repaired. The upper vents are designed for a/c only and the lower near the floor for heat. The dealer says it was the door that opens and closes to direct heat or a/c is behind the passenger 2nd row seat. They said it would have been about 600 bucks.
