Question Recommended Products

Can anyone on recommend a good Code Reader / Diagnostic device that won't bankrupt me? I know my way around a truck, but I'm no Certified Mechanic. nd I'm new to Durangos. I just gout a 1999 Durango Police Cruiser with the 5.9 Magnum, and 96,000 miles - so I want to take the best care of it I can. And yes, the First Generation Durango is the best looking SUV ever made, and I have thought that since 1998.

Use your cell phone or tablet. Get the 'Torque' app for $5.00 or so. Buy an ELM327 device off eBay for less than $20. Don't get the short versions of the ELM327, get the longer one. I have two of these.

It's really great to be able to have the ELM in the glove box and have your 'scanner' with you wherever you go. You can even monitor things (O2 readings, water temp, etc.) as you drive.

All of the cheap ones are about the same. Make sure it can clear as well as read codes. Amazon has tons.

mmkay. I don't do smartphones or tablets. I use my phone to make calls, thats it. And I'm not looking for a cheap one, but not sure what a cheap code reader is. I just don't want to spend more than a few hundred dollars.

That's too bad, because you can buy a $40 Amazon Fire 7" tablet for $39.98 and the ELM327 for $15 and end up with way more capability that you can find for $200 in a dedicated unit.

Just to add an experience note if you are going to purchase a code clearing reader......
Before you pull the trigger on one, you might get the model number and search the mfg. for possibility of software upgrades. Even some name brands don't offer upgrades for particular models.
A HF model touch pad failed a month out of warranty. I got what I paid for there.

I agree with don, the best option for the money is a Bluetooth reader and the torque app.

I have had the same one for a few years now, still works great on all my vehicles. The diagnostic software and ASE mechanic support its also pretty good as well.. Highly recommend this as well.

You guys, Sharp and Old_, are making my and That_'s point. Your solution has less function and is more costly. It's also useless for anything other than it's appointed task, unlike a tablet. OP, good luck on your quest.
