I have an 02 Durango that has started to have a clunking noise that seems to be eminating from the steering column just behind steering wheel when turning at low speeds. Does anyone have any recommendations of possible cause?

What he said, definitely the most likely cause.

Only thing I could think of besides the U joints would be the sleeve bolt behind the steering wheel and the pinch bolt at the steering rack/gearbox. Both of those are unlikely culprits, U joints are a much more likely cause, but it doesn't hurt to check if they're tight.

I had a issue sorta like that. Kept hearing a clunking and could feel it in the wheel. If I would lift the front end off the ground and set it down the clunking would go away for a while. It was the ball joints the inside of them were torn and every time I turned the wheel I would hear and feel the clunking.
