Front driveshaft rebuildable?
Is the forward end of the front driveshaft rebuildable? This was causing my vibration upon acceleration, and the shop says it's not rebuildable and has to be replaced at a cost of $854. Seems kind of crazy that a person would have to replace the whole shaft Everytime the rubber wears out.
out. Is this correct or can the rubber be replaced?
Thanks

I'm not sure but it may help others answer if you're a little more specific with your post. 4.7's were mated to entirely different transmissions than the 5.2 or 5.9 and there were also multiple transfer case options. All of these can change overall length and thus have a different driveshaft. So yours could be a completely different shaft than what's in my Durango, for example
I have the 4.7 in mine. I can't get the pics to upload so will try them tomorrow. The end with the bad rubber is round and has several bolts holding 2 plates together.

That should help. Definitely a different driveshaft than mine. Looks like a CV joint on that end. Mine is a double cardon U Joint. Just wait for someone to chime in. Wish I could help but I have no info on those.
shop around for a price for the driveshaft...depending on your year, you can get then for 3-400$. at rockauto..install it yourself and save all the shop labour of having them rebuild the old one.
Thanks everyone. I was quoted $854 to replace the shaft and was told it's NOT rebuildable.
I will start looking for a replacement part

It is rebuildable. Here is the part. Look for a new mechanic too. Shops tell you things they don't want to do are 'not possible' so they just get more money quicker selling you more than you need. Since you are not doing this yourself though, you're at their (lack of) mercy. If there is a driveshaft shop in your town, and you pull the shaft and hand it to them to fix, for sure it will be less than $800+.
