Popping/grinding in 4WD
I have a 2001 Dodge Durango that makes a loud clunking popping banging sound that is more pronounced on the drivers side when put in 4WD hi or low. Does anyone know what that might be and how much the part might be?
Don't use 4wd unless 2wd doesn't get it done, and NEVER on pavement, wet or dry. A regular transfer case in 4wd locks both drive shafts together, always turning at the same rate. When you are in a turn though, the average distance the front tires travel is greater than the average distance the rear tires travel. Something has to give. It's not a problem on slick surfaces and loose gravel where one tire can easily slip a bit. When all four tires have good traction, u-joints usually break.
Basically, you're abusing your truck and are complaining that it it is complaining.

Start with what I mentioned above. Being side specific, it's more than likely a work CV joint.

Verify exactly what is wrong first. Don't just make a good guess and whip out your wallet. Crawl under and do an inspection, wiggle things, put the drive shaft on the bench if you can't tell while under it. IF it is the CV, someone else here looked into it last week. I remember seeing a CV for a Durango front at O'Reilly's for $155 or so, just the end joint.
