So it won't start after the belt broke, but it also did start after the belt broke? Care to elaborate? What engine? How long has it sat?

Default Provlem solved

The truck started immediately after the belt broke but wouldnt start back up after the new belt was put on. My mechanic said that the a/c comoressor had locked and that broke the belt and wouldn't let it start back up. So here's hoping that once thats put on it'll be fine. Thanks so much.

Does it still start with the belt off now?

if you think a locked up a/c cmpressor is the problem get the shorter, non a/c belt and see if it starts with that belt on, if it does then you have your confirmation. alot cheaper than throwing an a/c compressor or clutch at it hoping its the right part.

Also, just for start testing, you don't need the belt at all. Just leave the belt off and try to start it. The A/C pulley should spin easily by hand without the belt on there.

If the compressors is "locked", then that should just be the idler clutch assembly. When the AC is off, the pulley should spin free. Once you turn on the AC, the clutch magnetically locks and starts turning the compressor. Replacing the clutch is a lot cheaper than replacing the entire compressor. I replaced mine without removing the compressor lines, so no Freon was lost.
