Default Changing out Power Steering Pump 5.9

Happy holidays all. So I decided to make a new post instead of just jumping off of my old one where I originally had transmission issues which has been fixed. I discovered a pretty good leak from my power steering. Looks like it is coming from the pump itself and not the reservoir. I have read a bit and it appears changing both all together is best. My delema is how do you remove the low pressure line? I see the high pressure is hooked in by a fitting and such but it seems the low pressure just is somehow connected inside. I don’t see anything you can unscrew from the ps pump for the low pressure line. I have attached a picture for reference. Oh, and vehicle is 01 Durango RT 5.9.

Low pressure line is part of the reservoir and all you need to do is slide the rubber line off. There's no reason you can't reuse the reservoir either.

That said, most powersteering pumps you can buy are complete **** anymore. I bought a cardone rebuilt one a couple years ago and it failed in 50 miles. I bought an acdelco one then and it wouldn't work out of the box. Ended up putting the original one back and am just living with the slow leak. You'd be much better off finding a oem one at the junkyard that either works or that you can get rebuilt.

Make sure you have some good powersteering pulley pullers and installers too.

thank you for the good info. I think I might just go to the junk yard around here and see if I can find one that looks in good condition.

Where exactly is it leaking? How do you know the pump needs replacing (vs fittings or o-rings or something)?

going by sight here lol. Looks more like the leak is coming from the pulley area.. then again I haven’t bothered to take it apart. It’s not coming from the fittings at all for sure.

Perhaps the seal between the pump itself, and the reservoir?

that’s what I think. Just going to spend $30 at a junk yard and go from there. Got another weird question. Super hard to explain. When driving on the highway for 20 minutes. I notice it seems like my engine/sound is allot more deeper. Like I have custom exhaust or something. I love the sound don’t get me wrong but it’s only after I get off the highway I notice it more deeper so to say? Making sense? Didn’t think so lol. Trying to pin point when this exactly starts. Just feels like it’s not only deeper but more power I getting to the wheels.

So I think I might have an exhaust manifold leak? This is for the louder than usual exhaust sound I’m experience. Or it’s normal and my city driving sound is the leak? I have some videos I took from normal driving vs after driving on the highway. I will try to post these to YouTube Saturday night. Working non stop lately.

Its very odd and hard to explain. Normal driving before getting on the highway my exhaust doesn’t sound deep and it actually seems more underpowered and I guess I hear more of the engine Rpms.

While after doing some highway travel(70mph), get off the highway back into city driving, I hear more of my exhaust than the actually engine Rpms. And it sounds nice! Feels more power to the wheels and more throttle response. I just wish I could have this all the time. Anyway, no ticking noises since the oil change, no weird smells inside either. So any suggestions for this particular thing... I’m all for it.

Sode note. Only CEL codes are 1740 0711 0712 0713.

I wonder if your cat is failing, and getting it good an hot on the freeway allows it to breath a bit easier??
