Hi, new here. I have an 01 Durango 5.9L 4x4. Ever since i bought it a few weeks ago ive had on and off problems getting it started. There are times where i can put the key in and start it right up. other times, more often than not, I have to crank it a couple times about 5 seconds a piece. Then after it starts, i smell a really strong gas smell. Ive checked and no leaks anywhere. Ive heard timing, and ive heard a clogged CAT. Any clue what it could be?

 

Timing is completely computer controlled, and is not adjustable in any event.

Think I would check fuel pressure first.

Try holding the gas pedal a bit to keep the throttle cracked open a bit and see if that helps. Could be an IAC valve issue.

 

Make a deliberate effort to turn the key on for 5 secs or so, 5 times or more before you engage the starter.
A pump in the tank will run, you may not hear it over the anti-lock brakes ramping up.

If it starts more consistently this way, it's the check valve in the pump - I'm living with mine until another reason to pull the tank!
Otherwise, no harm!
