Question 2000 Durango 5.9L engine idle question

Hey all,

After the long rebuild process, we dropped the 5.9 back in to the '00 Durango for my son. Hooked everything back up and got it to fire up relatively easily...had to reroute the spark plug wires a couple times but finally have it mostly running. I say mostly running because the damn thing will not idle. On start up the tach goes up to about 1600 rpm, and begins to settle down nicely...however, once it reaches about 900 rpm, it slowly begins to die off...once 600-700 rpm is hit, it shuts down completely. Have checked the following: IAC - swapped with known new one, MAP sensor - swapped with one off a running 5.9 as well as the TPS.

As long as you keep your foot on the gas, it will run and "idle" with assistance...

Where do we go from here...

No check engine codes are being displayed nor are any pending....

Need help fast...

Thanks,

Steve

symptoms match a weak battery or a bad IAC motor, if the IAC was actually new its possible that it is faulty out of the box (been there done that, its rare but does happen).

If the IAC is aftermarket, the truck may simply not like it as well.

Usually, the PCM can figure out idle pretty quick......

Replaced the batter and terminal ends and no real change...

Will be checking on getting a mopar IAC later today. Also found this from the "Speedtweaks Tips and Tricks PDF" while researching :It talks about indexing the fuel system, could this also be a cause of our idle issues?

On a bright note, we did take it on the maiden voyage up and down the road...as long as you kept your foot on the gas she ran reasonably well all things considered...

Thanks in advance....will let you know what I find out.

Probably talking about fuel sync. That is the relationship between cam sensor, and crank sensor. Really need a scanner that can read it to set it properly. There are procedures in the service manual for initial setup.... that gets it close enough to run decent. Still doesn't hurt to check it.

Ok, got it RUNNING! We pretty much followed the Indexing PDF that I posted above. Will check with my mechanic friend when he gets back from "The Ranch" out at Burning Man...He has the tablet diagnostic tool...long story short we adjusted the distributor to idle properly and viola...she runs...Now to break her in before giving it to the boy!
