Default transfer case

i have a 2000 Durango with a 5.9 today i tried to put into 4 wheel lock for the first time,i was at stopped in the drive way put it into 4 wheel low the dash light came on (4 wheel lock) pulled forward about 25 feet stopped and tried to put into 4 wheel high and it started to make some grinding noise, had to pull hard to get out of gear to stop if from grinding, now the shift lever feels like it's not hooked to any thing just moves back and forth not going into low or high the truck goes forward and backwards, what do you think i did.

Best to shift into/out of 4 lo while moving VERY slowly, foot off the gas, and YANK the stick to where you want it.

I've always preferred in park when shifting between high and low range. Even in neutral there's enough drag to turn the output shaft of the trans some with no load on it and make gears grind. Being on mostly level ground where it can roll just a bit while the transfer case goes through neutral (trans still in park) isn't a bad idea either.
