Ok. No I don't have a fuel pressure gauge or a compression tester to check compression (as someone else had suggested). I guess I'll have to get my hands on some somehow.

Was it ticking when you cold started, leading up to this? Time to pull off the valve cover. When the lifters finally fail, they can eject the rockers. If they don't come to rest somewhere safe, they can do a lot of damage.

Every Dodge I've ever had, had a slight engine tick like that.

So today I may have done a stupid thing. I wanted to see if I could get the coolant temp sensor or map sensor to throw a code out to see if I could even get a code from them if they were bad. So I started the engine with those 2 electrical connectors off and the engine was running for about 10 seconds then I hear a small pop and see a spray come up from the engine in what looked like that area. It only happened for a second so I shut the engine off and looked around but can't find a hole anywhere and now the engine won't even start to idle. Any ideas as to what happened?

Yep. It will tick like that until one day, something fails. The ticking is usually the lifters in the case of the 4.7. I speak from experience. https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...ine-issue.html

Yeah maybe tomorrow I'll take the valve covers off. What do I do if everything in there looks fine though? It's very odd that I'm not getting a check engine light saying cylinder misfire or anything like that.

On my 98 full size, with the 8.0, I had a completely dead cylinder, the plug wire was burnt in half. There was absolutely zero chance that cylinder was firing.... and it was like that for a couple weeks before I had time to address it. In all that time, never set a code, CEL never came on, except the test at initial key on.

Yeah. The fact that you're not getting any specific codes that can actually lead you to the problem, makes it tougher to solve. At this point it's all guessing. One of my guesses is possible bad crank or cam sensor. You said it ran fine for a while with the Bosch plugs? These trucks hate all things Bosch. For the critical sensors like crank, cam...stick with Mopar.

So when I get my Durango running right I'm going to need some new plugs to replace these Bosch ones. I can't find the thread of recommended plugs. Can someone show me that thread or just please tell me the best plugs for my 2000 4.7L engine? Thanks!!

**Yet another update**
So I finally did a compression test and the #2 cylinder has 0 compression. I'll leave it to my mechanic to figure out why.
