Default 2000 4.7 ECM question.

I had a dead miss that I narrowed down to the ECM. It's a 2000 with the 4.7l. I got an ECM from eBay that matched mine. Part numbers the same. Came from the right year and engine according to the listing. I swapped it in and it would start right up. But after a second or two it would just shut off. It did this a few times before it got to where it just wouldn't fire up at all.

Swapped it back and it fired right up and ran on the old ECM. Just has the miss.

Ive been reading and I've seen people say they are just plug and play. Some people say it needs programed to the vin? Some say it matters if the vehicle is security or not?

I don't know if my model is security equiped? Doesn't have a chip key. I do have keyless entry. Is that ECM I got from ebay just bad? Kinda need steered in the right direction.

What color is your key?

It *might* have security, but, I think that prevents the engine from starting at all......

I would be tempted to troubleshoot the misfire with the original PCM, verify that it is indeed the PCM that is the problem.

It's a gray key but it's not the oval key it's the more triangular looking one. As far as I'm aware it's not security because I've made copies that work that aren't chipped.

I've been through the whole diagnosis. The code was for a short on number 6 ignition circuit. New coil. New plug. Even as far as to eliminate the wiring harness completely by taking the wires straight from the connector at the ECM all the way to the coil pack and still would not fire the coil. And it's only that one cylinder it's not firing the coil.

The brief time it fired up on the other ECM I didn't feel the miss so I do believe I'm on the right track.

I don't think this one is because like I said I've gotten regular steel blanks and it starts just fine. And I'm about all the chip keys had to be oval?

My understanding was, the black keys were just keys, the gray keys were "security" keys. I don't know how the system actually works though.... is there some value resistor in the key? or some sort of RFID chip? No clue there. (I mostly deal with the older stuff. ) I suppose it is possible that things changed on your truck over the years..... but, that's one of those things that is fun to figure out....

With the new pcm, what are you not getting? Does the fuel pump prime? Getting spark? Fuel pressure? Injector pulse?

After starting and stalling a few times then not starting at all it appears it killed spark. I hear the pump.

I think that is indeed security...... Flashing the PCM to the correct VIN *might* solve it... but, don't know for sure.

I would think the security lite would be on in the dash if that were the case though....

So my best bet would probably be on to the online sellers that programs the vins into the ECMs?

Also if it matters the key for the ignition isn't the key for the doors. So it's been changed at some point.
