Default Manual 4WD 2001 Durango 5.9 Issues

Honestly I have searched for awhile and have only come across info regarding the electronically controlled 4WD systems in these vehicles. A little back story. This vehicle is new to me and I haven't had much experience with Dodge products through the years. I picked this Durango up and I love the thing, the issue being the 4WD oddity. For it to be in 4WD neutral it needs to sit halfway down past the N on the 4WD stick. Yesterday all if a sudden when going up a hill(I drive daily) I heard the 4WD attempt to engage at 45mph. I pulled onto the shoulder then put my steering wheel gear selector into neutral and then pushed the 4WD stick back towards neutral. What I noticed immediately is the 4WD stick no longer has any resistance and it will not engage any 4WD function. Even with the vehicle in motion there is no grinding or resistance from attempting to select 4 high, 4 low, or 4 lock. I'm not sure as of the 4WD assembly or setup dodge has used for their manually selected 4WD and any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm looking to replace my water pump this Saturday and figured if I'm tearing into things I might as well fix the 4WD. Cheers and thanks again.

That shift lever connects to the t-case via a rod, with a couple bushings that hold it in place. The bushings wear, the shifter gets sloppy, and eventually, the rod can simply fall out.... and the shifter does nothing. Time to crawl under there, and have a look.

I appreciate it. Well looks like itll be a long weekend. Winters get severe in my state so working 4WD when traversing steep twisting roadways is usually a good idea hahaha.

And good tires too. Yep, all too familiar with that.
