I am towing a 21 ft Road Runner that weighs 3,200 empty and max GVWR is 4,700. I am towing it with a 2003 Durango 5.9L. I pulled it last weekend without the Equalizer hitch's spring arms attached (I have to weld the brackets to the frame because of where my LPG bottles are, I can't bolt them on) and I had no problems whatsoever. Much beyond 21 feet though you WILL need sway control because your trailer is now much, much longer than your wheelbase can handle.
The only problem I had was at 80° F outside temperature my engine and trans was getting hot. Dodge is going to take a look at it tomorrow and see why.

get the towing package? IMHO, it's money well spent.
the trans cooler will surely help. I'm not sure what the "heavy duty cooling system" listed in the tow package is, but it probably can't hurt.

I also have a 2003 Durango with a 4.7 engine. I'm looking at a 23 foot travel trailer. Will the Durango pull it or am I asking for prolems? The trailer weighs about 4200 empty. What about sway?
Thanks for your suggestions.

All durangos have plenty of power to pull quite a large trailer. My big worry is will a trailor take the durango for a ride when it comes time for a sudden stop. Sway bars are not a cure when it comes down to a vehicle not having enough weight to slow all that mass down.
Ok, to follow suit i guess I am new to this. I have a 2001 4WD 5.9 Durango. I am wondering what is a truely safe length to pull in the way of a travel trailor. My Durango can tow 7950 lbs. but with the short wheel base---length will surely be a problem. I am looking at between 21' and 24'. No one seems to be able to inform me on what is safe. Any help or ideas will help in our choice and style of camper. Thank you, Barizona
I can't tell you what is a safe maximum, but I took a Jayco 21' travel trailer that weighs 5000lbs for a trip to upstate New York a couple weeks ago. What I learned: sway control really does work. Electric trailer brakes are a must, but the truck will stop it without much difficulty. With the 5.7L HEMI, the coolant gauge stayed exactly where it always is (A/C on, long uphills too). On one long uphill I tried not to lose too much momentum and really put my foot in it. 4800 RPM for about 4 minutes and the coolant was again, rock steady. I was impressed. The wife in the passenger seat was like OMFG! What are you doing?! LOL
I always am concerned with this truck, at least a little bit. It seems to put out MUCH more heat than any other car I have ever owned. The gauge is steady though and the rad is doing it's job effectively. My infrared thermometer showns temps around 200-205 at the rad inlet and around 160 at the outlet. Very impressive.
Jest my two cents worth...
