Speedometer doesnt work until I hit 40 MPH
Hi everyone,
I'm just wondering why my 1999 Durango's speedometer doesnt work until I hit 40MPH.
Until I hit 40MPH, it just stays down at 0MPH.
Has anyone experienced this, and also do you know how to fix it?
Thanks,
LW

Two possibilities I can think of. First, have you had any transmission work done? Second, have you also had problems with the brake lights coming on (the BRAKE and ABS lights)? Both of these can affect the speedometer, although with the transmission it usually just makes it not work at all. The ABS sensor is probably the most likely candidate. It could just be a bad speedometer cable, but again, I wouldn't expect it to start working at 40mph, rather I'd expect it to not work at all, or work incorrectly (read 25mph when you're passing cars on the freeway).
if that doesnt fix it, IS your check engine light on ? if so then replace your speed sensor, it's located ontop of your rear axle, in the top center of the pumpkin, they'er 40 bucks at the dealers, mine went out not to long ago so yea.. been there done that
Your problem is the rear axle speed sensor. It'll take you about 10 minutes to change and 5 of that'll be getting under there to do it. Part cost about $29
One bolt, one plug… 10 minutes. Saves big on going to the dealer.
