As far as electronics go, it's definitely possible to buy a bad one brand new. Good luck with your D. Keep it taken care of and she'll treat you well.
I replaced my TPS with the cheapest one Advance Auto Parts had. It lasted 2,000 miles then went bad. I went back and spent $40 on the version with a lifetime warranty and all has been fine since! The only good thing is, if you need to change one out, it’s literally a 3 min job as stated in other posts.
