Luggage Rack Removal
Couldn't seem to find any info on this in the Haynes manual, but maybe I just didn't look hard enough. I want to remove the luggage racks on the roof of my 1998 Durango. How would I go about doing this?
Push on the clips to release them, so that they can slide. Slide them all the way to the back of the rack and right off. It's a PITA cause you have to slide them really straight to get it to move. It's been a while since I took mine off, so I cant quite recall if you have to slide it to the front or the back, but I'm pretty sure it's back.
It's on the back. There are some clips on the rear as well that have to be removed in order to get them off. IMHO I don't like the look of them off DC did a good job of covering up the raise in the roof by adding them and when they are taken off you can really notice it and it looks awkward.
I'll have to see how it looks with the racks off. I figure they have to be causing some unnecessary drag, although I don't really know how much, or if that little bit would even matter.

Yeah you'll probably end up with .25 mpg difference I'm sure it wouldn't be noticeable at all. Now if it was a safari rack or something that's diferent.

Ditto. I think they look pugly once you get them off, because that bulge is incredibly noticeable, plus it looks like a bald guy. I was actually thinking of getting a box/additional rack system some time on mine, so I can mount some offroad lights up there. Also, I've been thinking, if I don't add the odd-road lights up there, I may add some clearance lights up top, to add to the truck look I wanna get, ya know?

I am not sure if this helps but my 03 SLT I had to have the Mechanic do it at least the first time, I watched him though. He had to remove a set screw, slide the rack back to the new position, then reinstall the set/shipping screw in the empty slot.
No screws here on a 2000.
You slide them off at the back after removing the little black 'stopper' on each rail. I took mine off this summer after being the only one who hadn't at the All Chrysler Nationals in July. Pictured is part of the Durango Owners Club who were in attendance.
