RE: can crank pulley be removed by hand?
You're gonna have a helluva time loosening that bolt by hand, but it can be done. Try sliding a small length of pipe over your breaker bar to get a little more leverage. You may need to get that side of the car way up in the air to give you a little more room under there. Some auto stores around me will loan tools for a returnable deposit. Try an Auto Zone, etc.they may have a cordless impact wrench you can borrow. If you do use an impact be mindful when putting the pulley back on to let the impact just turn the crank bolt, keeping the impact socket just slightly back from the lip of the bolt. An impact can damage threads if you let it pound the bolt back in.
You're not going to damage anything by using the brake etc. Once you get the bolt lossened though, do you have a 3 jaw pulley puler? You won't be getting that pulley off without one.
best of luck with your project!
