Service Engine Code 72
So yeah, My service engine light came on yesterday. I have been able to look up it was a code 72 and that means "Catalytic Converter Efficiency Failure"
[which I might add is not on the list for OBD engines??]
If anyone can give me any diagnostic pointers since I don't have scan tools available until august
i'd gladly appreciate it.

" Do Not Just Replace the Converter
A catalytic converter is designed to reduce normal exhaust emissions. It can mask problems that are related to the fuel or ignition systems, or mechanical problems. This will overwork the converter and it probably will not last long. An overworked converter will lose efficiency. Converters do not usually just stop working. they just work less and less effectively. Before replacing a converter, determine whether there is another problem that has contributed to its failure [The reason I'm asking for diagnostics] Installing a new converter might fix the problem for a while, but it is sure to come back when the converter fails once again." I would like to fix my car, not temporarily fix my car.I cannot afford to replace the ocnverter twice. I found my technicians text book so i guess I have that to follow.

That is all fine and dandy my ASE certified technician instructor also spoke from experience when my a/c wasn't working saying I had a leak in the evaporator BUT we did a diagnostic on it to find my condensor was leaking like crazy. So I went from going to spend 300$ to only spending 40$. Like I said I appreciate you expertice but I will follow the ASE certified way.

But to answer your original question, you could just reset the PCM and see if it comes back. If so, check the wiring to the downstream O2 sensor. The sensor heater wire may be shorted to the sensor wire.
