Default Over heating

Ok as some of you might know, I finally got my car up and running. The only issue I have right now is that when I take a test drive around the block, it wants to over heat.[:@] I shut it down and had it towed to my buddys drive way. I would like to know what could cause overheating. I know about the thermastat, and maybe water pump, but what else could cause this? Im going to start trying to fix this issue step by step. Please dont ask if I have changed anything yet, I just want to know what could cause over heating.I apoligize but i didnt feel like searching.

Have the same problem. Fans don't want to run on there own so I hooked them up direct and now my rpms are running high. Someone told me to check the relay that controls the fans well would love to can't find the damn relays. If you know where the relays are could you let me know. But I did everything you did by changing the temp sensor and I even changed the powertrain control module. Its the silver computer lookin box under the fill up for the windsheild wiper fluid. I think the temp sensor helped some but need the relay changed and then I'll be find I hope.

So, check the thermostat, replace radiator cap, and tempsensor. I dont think its the head gasket cause its brand new. My fan comes on as well. But I will def check out those 3 items.

Has it done this ever since the head gasket was replaced? You may have an air pocket which will cause overheating and cooling fans not to run. Does it overheat driving down the road as well as sitting?

It's just in front of the battery tray on the frame rail.

From the 1st Gen FAQ's...
Q: My neon is overheating...what should I check?
A: There are several reasons: bad fan relay, low coolant, defective radiator cap, clogged radiator, bad Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS), bad thermostat, radiator fans not working properly, headgasket leaking, radiator fins are damaged, and faulty water pump. (Info courtesy of spudsterier and FuzzRacer)

It does it while sitting and driving down the road, but it really shoots up when just sitting.

Thanks for the info das, I knew it was around here somewhere.

I would remove the thermostat completely or take side cuts and remove the spring from the old one so it is open all the time. This will help you determine if it is a t-stat issue or air pocket or waterpump issue. If it does it driving down the road then most likely the cooling fans are not the cause, but rather another symptom. You may have a plugged radiator or no blades left on the water pump. Turn your heat on inside the car when it is overheating and see if you have good heat this will tell you how much your water pump is circulating.
