If it has ***** its a SOHC

The resonator under the hood should say what it is.....

that bottom one is a very sexy dohc engine

from the pics, notice the diffeence in the size of the heads.....on the left side of the motor, a sohc wil have 1 hump on the plastic cover......top pic shows the hump...
thedohc has 2 humps, my motor in the bottom pic didnt have the timing cover on it when the pic was taken, but here is another with it......
also, if you notice, the spark plug wires on a sohc kinda sit angeled ON the calve cover.....with a dohc the plug wires sit more IN the top of the valve cover

One way to tell if it is a sohc or a dohc without opening the hood (that is if the hood has been changed) Is if the hood has a bulge on the passenger side it is a dohc if not it is a sohc.

 

Theres 9 Second SOHC engines running at the Strip which is among the fastest Neon times ever within a half second, it all depends how much you want to stick into your engine. Both the DOHC Engine and SOHC Engine have 4 Valves per Cylinder, I guess theonly reason people can outright tell me the DOHC has an advantage is you can adjust your Exhuast side Valves, The SOHC engine isnt a slouch at all, in stock form a SOHC Automatic car will own a DOHC Automatic.

Personally I don't think your getting screwed no matter what Engine you have, a good driver and a properly modded SOHC can make any DOHC equiped car work for its reputation.

Pretty much just get a 5 speed and both engines come to life with good results

 

thats not entirely accurate if the car is a 95 since alot of 95 sohc sport came with the sport bulge hood

and yeah, that dohc is VERY far from stock
