To me, it looks like defective rings, or, did the shop bore the motor out any? It looks like to me they were not within tolerances for that size piston and ring set so it was tight from the time you put it in, honestly I do not see anyway you personally could have done that. I have put together plenty of motors and it is hard to screw something up that bad. Take the block and pistons to another machine shop and see what they have to say, it is always good to get professional opinions.

well i took the block and pistons back to the shop that did the engine work this morning.....
the guy said that it looks like the piston was sticking to the cylinder wall....he also said that it looks like ther wasnt enough clearance between the piston and wall.....he said the normal clearance is about .0005-.001 well when i told him that the paper work said thy should have .004 clearance, he seemed shocked that they called for that much....
so, he is gonna check it all again, re hone it, check the clearaces, and re bore it if he has too....atleast that part isnt costing me any more money....but it might be awhile until he gets to it[:@]

now im gonna have to buy 1 new piston..$125....all new gaskets....~$ 150......and new rings....$100
atleast i dont have to pay for the block work though
hopefully within a month or 2it will be back up and running...unless i get lucky

it sux that i still have to replace the piston and all the other junk, but atleast i am saving money on having to get the block redone

Hehe, I was right! I would fight like hell to have them pay for that piston and rings, maybe be reasonable not to make them pay for the gasket set, but that was a result of their negligence.

I have to disagree, they took the right approach by declining to do the assembly work, they may have done machine work to the block, but did they also have the pistons/rings/ paperwork from piston mfgr for spec reference?? If not, they just go by standard spec, Spud stated that the clearance spec'ed by the piston mfgr is .004 which the shop thinks is a bit much. If the shop did all their work based on the nornal clearance .0005-.001 spec, how can they be at fault. I think they are willing to redo the work, just to keep a good name and reputation which I find admirable, but not really necessary if they did not have all the proper info to do the job to spec the first time.

now that you haveeverything taken apart maybe you should consider piston coatings.
