Default Auto trans problem

so its a 96 2 door auto sohc. Park holds the car but i can feel the engine still pulling on the trans like its in gear and in park. Reverse just puts a load on the engine but doesnt go anywhere. N is first gear when pushing on the gas, but when not pushing it just idles when moving (but when sitting at a stop in N the car idles and has pull at the tires) Drive is drive 2nd is 2nd and 1st is first.

I heard mabye it could be a torgue converter switch thing?

Sounds like you probably have some frictions welded up inside the trans.

First thing you do is not listen to 98neon2.0.

Second check your fluid and see if levels are correct. I had a problem like this before with my old transmission where no matter where I put the shifter it was 1st gearexcept forreverse whichwas somewhat neutral it rocked both forward and backward. What fixed it was adding a quart of transmission fluid (ATF+4) and letting it sit for a few minutes running while I had my foot on the brake. Possible short termsolutions you might consider are: Changing the Transmission fluid and filter. 3rd thing to try.... take out your Kick down bolt totally! then tighten it down and back it out 3 turns this can help fix certain issues withyour band. I actually had this problem a month ago with my new transmission me and my brother rebuiltand it was my lock nut on the bandbolt wasn't tight enough and it backed itself out causing me to lose some of my gears and weird operating of park and reverse. This bolt can control alot of BS in your transmission and this is what I recomend... what I said above with tightning it and backing it out 3 turns, after readjusting mine it worked great! no problems what so ever.

I don't think its the Torque Converter lock up at this time but if you persist to haveing these problems you could swap out your valve body and if it still isnt that get a new transmission or rebuild your current one. Torque converters rarely go out so thats why I doubt its that.

Do you think its okay to drive on the highway for a week? I am going to part this one out when the turbo is done. But I need it to last till then. Thanks for the info i will give it a try, i even tried tranny additives and that didnt work. I heard that the kid did alot of N drops in it and for a while even drive slipped but he said it just stopped slipping one day...

Yeah I did alot of Neutral drops with my old transmission and mine did the same thing yours did. Chances are your bands are pretty close to bare steel now if he did alot of Neutral drops. Towards the end of my transmissions life the last 2 neutral drops I did broke the camels back and wern't even intended as I put my car in reverse at a stop light so I wouldn't get my cars nose cleaned off and the light turned green and I threw it in to drive fast as somebody was about to rear end me, and after that my transmission slipped alot! and eventually wore off all of the clutch bands meterial.

I'm not saying your clutch bands are worn off but its a good possibility after hearing about the neutral drop story that if you add another quarter of transmission fluid that it will increase the inside transmissionpressure enough for it to work normal and then if it does I'd give you about 2-3 months on that transmission, thats what worked with mine when it did the same thing your talking about after I did2 neutral drops in one night by accident.

So once youput the quart of fluid in give it about 1-2 minutes to circulate and get in the car with your foot on the brake and go through all the gears and try to make it do something. After adding a quart of transmission fluid it took about 1 minutes of me going through the gears till I got it to engage. Keeping a little pressure on the gas is ok too. If it works you got 2-3 months maybe less, mine lasted about 2-3 after that incident.

As for right now I think you could squeeze a week out of the tranny at least but I would deffinitly expect to get a different transmission put in sooner or later.

If you are desperate adjust the band the way I explained in my previous post, that helps a little bit too if not just about cure it in some cases.

sounds like a blown valve body gasket to me. leaking circuit pressure to the forward clutch. id hate to say this but, take it into a shop. not many hobby guys have what it takes to work on tranny's. most gen. shops wont even touch them.

after talking to my dad ( a tranny builder of like 20yrs) he said it doesnt even have a gasket for the valve body. he said it sounds more like forward clutch has welded itself together. he said also that if the intermediate band was out of adjustment it would have no 2nd gear. if the reverse band was out of adjustment you would have problems backing up.
