95 to 96.. i hooked the tach up like you said...it had 4 wires
red...=12volt power source
black = ground
green = which i wired into the gray wire with blue stripe
and white which is the light ...

BUT i was gonna set my shiftlight and i noticed that im hittin the rev limiter at around 4 grand ...well thats not right because i have the af/x race computer and its 7800...would i be further ahead to wire it into the coil pack or wat am i doing wrong?....another thought i had is that the wire that splices into the gray and blue one was to short so i added to it with another piece i had in the garage ...the only thing is that its not the same gauge of wire ...could that be giving me a misreading?....i also grounded it directly to the body ...i jsut scraped some paint off and grounded it ..any way thats affecting it

 

Does it have a cylinder rating?

 

yes 4, 6 and 8 cylinders...95 to 96 said itd work ..and it does ...just not properly...the tach says its idleing at 500 rpms...that cant be right ....which wire does it need to tap into at the coil pack?

 

you do not tap it period in the coil pack... it would only give your tach half the reading...

I think i know what wrong...

Is there 2 wires that are looped coming out the back of the tach where the red black white and green wires come out??? I want to say one is brown but dont quote me...

 

if ur tach had a 2 cyl rating, u could keep it hooked up as is..... the coil packs were u wired it in at only read two cyl... and not four.... that is why u r only getting half of ur rpms on the tach

 

no offence what so everbut please dont confues him... i know exactly whats wrong... and waiting to see witch model of tach it is to know what he needs to do... either model i know what he needs to do... but if I just post it and he does the wrong thing he will be out 150 bucks on a nice tach...

 

the only wires coming out of the back of the tach are the 4 wires and the wire for the shift light ...do i need to buy sumthing else to make this work ...ill take some pics for ya and post um tonight

 

i ges ur right 95 to 96 there are wires looped in the back ...brown and orange ...im gesing the orange is and illumination wire ...wat do i need to do with the brown one

^^^^^the red wire going into the pcm is actually the brown one on the tach ..i had to add on to it because it was to short

 

ok good this is the easy type...

In the pic that i modded for you... I need you to cut the loops at the ends like shown... and just use a little electircal tape to isolate each one... so you should now have 2 brown wires and 2 orange wires...

walla done... it will work fine... this is how you select how many cylinders you have

leave the wires as they are for 8 cylinders (this would explain why you are running half of what it should..)
cut the brown wire for 6 cylinder
and cut both wires for 4

 

ok... works fine ..thanx for all the help
