thats what happens when a headgasket goes really bad and the fluid sits in the head...
the coolant/water will rust all the bare metal in there..

whenever a headgasket goes out really bad, its always a good idea the flush all the fluid out of the engine if its going to be sitting for a while....

if those cams have heavy rust deposits on the lobes then you may want to get some new cams....
you dont really wanna use sand paper or a wire brush on them because it will leave very small grooves on the surface.....if you decide that you dont wanna get new cams, then try some very very fine sand paper and maybe some steel wool

the car was wrecked with 14k on it and sat for a few years it was a 99 now has 18k on the motr from driving around all original 18567 miles on the motor now. it had the original oil filter still on it and all the stickers on the block and head and even the heat shield on the exhaust

and all the rust it wiped off when i cleaned all that gunk off the lobes are all smooth and clean again so its good to go

If you are talking about the synthetic blend, then you were wasting your money.
