belt for ac and power steering
my ac hasn't worked since i got the car. and my power steering pump keeps whining occasionally, and i was wondering if i could just take off the belt. would it cause any problems. i believe that those are the only two things on that belt is that correct? any advice would help.
As far as I've seen from pulling the engine, the ac and power steering are the only two on that belt. You may want to check and see if you can get a shorter belt to have only your power steering hooked up though because even though the car is light it can be hard to steer because of the rack and pinion setup.
would it hurt the rack and pinion to drive with out the power steering or no? my pump whines sometimes and i thought that if it wont hurt anything i won't have to listen to the whine when turning
I actually just had the a/c motor fry up a month ago and basically belt is broken. Searched online for an idler pulley of some sort. No such luck, yes it is harder to drive without power steering. If you use the lucas oil for p/s it helps with the whine, actually i had more from the ac than the ps. Reply back if you decide to go with a shorter belt, I have big hands and dont like "sticking a quarter in a penny slot".
are there any gains for going to a shorter belt or completely taking it off. hp or torque. i could handle not ps. my first car was a geo metro and it did not have ps. if there are no gains than i will just leave it on but if i gain a little hp or torque than i will take it off completely.

It takes power to drive the ac and the PS pump, so you'd gain something. How much? I have no idea... With 130hp, I think any would be noticable. A neon's heavier in the front then your old metro, but daily arm exercises never killed anyone...
Good luck
