Maybe with abused 1st gens. Does the knock persist or does it only happen at idle? In eihter case drive slower. Mine will do it in the morning then disappear and I beat on mine alot.

A rod knock, piston slap, and lifter noise are all different. Piston slap and lifter noise usually go away after warming up. If you have a rod knock I would try a new bearing on it. You may be lucky.

usually a bad rod knock in these cars is due to a spun bearing...in that case, the crank will have to be resurfaced or replaced, oversize bearings will most likey have to be purchased, and atleast one of the rods replaced...
