i have a 98 neon with is what i believe to be a 96 motor and my check engine light is on for my timing being wrong and i just did a valve job and my timing is correct ( i rechecked) i replaced the cam sensor but the light still comes on. anyone know what i should do next? is there a difference between a comuter in a 98 and a 96?

 

96-99 have the same, 95 has a different electrical connection. that's the only difference. I can sell u one w/ the harness prewired w/ female plugs on the wires if you want. I'm in ATL, it could also be the cam shaft could be a little off. carefully remove the cam sensor and make sure to clean the back side of the cam sensor...might have some metal shavings on it giving you a false reading. also, make sure your cam sits flush against the side of the cylinder head where the cam sensor bolts up.

 

if i check the camshaft and its not flush what would i have to do?

 

take the timing cover off the top of the motor, don't need to go all the way, leave the crank sensor removed, take the valve cover off, loosen up the rocker arms, don't need to completely remove them, then take a rubber mallet or small piece of wood(something that wont scar or dent the cam shaft) and lightly, and i repeat, LIGHTLY tap on the cam shaft until it is flush. you might be able to just push the cam shaft into position. I was able to on mine when I did my head work.

well im not even gonna worry bout that right now, ive got a bigger problem after driving through a big puddle

 

95 is different
96 is different
97-99 are the same

but as long as the sensors were changed, then there wouldnt be any problems from that
