squealing when shifting 98 neon
98 neon automatic, sometimes when I shift from drive I get a loud squealing sound no matter when I try to shift into something else or not. I can't make it stop unless I shut my car off while in gear and then put it in park and start it again. any ideas what this is?
my alt belt was shredded a few weeks ago so I replaced it, looked at it and it is fine. and I'm not sure if the AC is on when it happens, I never thought to pay attention. I know it was the last time cause it's hotter than hell. but not sure if it is everytime. what could the ac be doing? and I'm not sure of the RPM's as my lovely neon (ha) did not come with a tach.
This is not the first of bad problems with this car, I think it is about to retire. The guages aren't working so I am gathering up my patience to rip my dash apart and sauder the connections. i have the WORST power steering leak, somehow on top of the hose that comes down to the bottom of my car has a pin sized hole on the TOP which makes it spray all over my exhaust. when I turn and my cv's click and pop.

also it is very intermittent (sp?) but every once in awhile when slowing down for a stop light and not coming to a complete stop and even sometimes accellerating from a complete stop my car feels bogged down and has a power loss, it almost dies while driving, not sure what I SHOULD be doing about this (probably park it and let it die) but I manually shift it into second so it will get some more power and it seems fine after that.
Right now I am fixing up my 96 dodge ram 2500 all I've got left is to put the steering gear box in it this weekend and it is driveable again (yay)

CV's cost $50 each for lifetime warrenty remans, hose should be like 20 bux from a junkyard, soldering the dash takes half an hour to an hour...
Give you $200 for the car... Cash... I can come get it this weekend if you're within 800 miles of wisconsin...

ok power steering fluid on the belt would cause the belt to slip,get it fixed
also if its slipping bad enough the alternator could be slipping causing a sever load condition that requires more draw on the alternature dragging down the engine,
thus the funtions would be very slow almost shut off
put a meter on the battery to check voltage 12.5-13.5 -14 volts
the ac would be on in defost postion it would be very hot while working
let me know
